# 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise

When your thoughts are racing, bring your attention back to the room you are in, one sense at a time. Type what you notice, or just tap once for each thing.

## How the exercise works

Anxiety pulls attention inward, towards worries about what might happen. Grounding turns it outward, to what is around you right now. Naming real things takes enough focus to interrupt a spiral, and moving through all five senses gives your mind a simple task with a clear end.

Go slowly. There is no prize for speed, and it does not matter if you cannot find a smell or a taste: notice that, and move on. Saying things aloud or under your breath helps some people; writing them helps others.

## Questions

**When does grounding help?**

It is useful during a wave of anxiety or panic, after a fright, or whenever your thoughts are running ahead of you. Many therapists teach it as a quick, portable coping skill.

**What if I cannot smell or taste anything?**

That is common. Lift your sleeve or your hands to your nose, take a sip of water, or simply notice that there is no particular taste. The point is the noticing, not the answer.

**Is this a treatment for anxiety?**

No. It is a self-help exercise that many people find calming. If anxiety or panic is affecting your daily life, a doctor or therapist can help, and if you are in danger, call your local emergency number.
